Keeping your Lawn Hydrated in Summer

When summer finally arrives and the weather starts to warm up, the risk of extended dry spells and drought does increase. Water is vital for your lawn's health and when drought-like weather does occur you will need a watering programme, as part of your lawn care routine, to ensure it stays green and lush. Our resident lawn care experts recommend that you should water every 2-3 days in dry conditions. This should be done either in the early morning or in the evening, using a sprinkler attachment on your hose. Implementing a consistent watering schedule helps maintain lawn vitality during these conditions.

Summer Watering Tips

  • Water every 2-3 days when conditions are dry
  • When watering your lawn you should do this in the early morning or in the evening.
  • This is to avoid scorching your lawn as watering in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its strongest can damage your lawn.
  • Water using a sprinkler attachment on your hose.
  • We recommend not using a garden hose or watering can, as this will not give you an even coverage.
  • You should water 1-2 hours in each area of your lawn.
  • You will need to water your lawn enough so that the moisture reaches the grass root zone.
  • You can check this by digging out a core sample in your lawn. You can click here for advice on how to do this!

Mowing Lawns in Summer

Regular mowing is one of the most important jobs you can do when looking at summer lawn care and should be a consistent part of your lawn maintenance routine. Weekly mowing during the summer will benefit your lawn by encouraging new growth which will in turn thicken up your lawn. Our lawn care experts recommend always making sure that your blades are sharp before mowing, as blunt blades can rip and tear the grass causing white tips.

Summer Mowing Top Tips

  • Mow your lawn at least once a week for the best results.
  • In general summer conditions you should mow your lawn at a height of between 1-1.5 inches.
  • If we were to go through a prolonged dry spell with drought-like conditions, then your mower height should be raised between 1.5-2 inches for cuts.
  • Never mow your lawn below a height of 1 inch as this can scalp your lawn and potentially damage the grass plant.

TopGrass Water Conserver Treatment

During drought-like weather conditions your soil can become incredibly dry, and in the worst cases become hydrophobic meaning that your soil actively repels water instead of absorbing it. The TopGrass Water Conserver Treatment helps to prevent this from happening by improving your lawn's ability to not only absorb water but also retain it. Our Water Conserver Treatment is a great accompaniment to a standard lawn treatment programme, and once applied, lasts up to 3 months to cover the summer period.

Benefits of our Water Conserver Treatment

  • Improved soil water retention
  • Improved soil water absorption
  • Increased accessibility for water and nutrients to reach the root zone of the grass plant.
  • Improved colour and growth of the lawn.
  • Greater resistance against drought conditions, such as dry patches.

Used by hundreds of satisfied homeowners, our Water Conserver Treatment enhances drought resistance while reducing the need for frequent watering.

Controlling Summer Weeds

The weather conditions in summer time are great for grass growth, however they are also the perfect conditions for creeping weeds like clover or speedwell. Weeds are a problem for lawns as they can smother grass, starving it of vital nutrients and oxygen. Invasive weeds are commonplace in UK lawns and can easily be tackled through lawn treatments that are a part of our affordable lawn care services. Our Selective Weed Control, that is a part of our Early Season Treatment and Mid-Season Treatment, targets those unattractive weeds helping your grass to thrive instead. In the UK, clover, dandelion, and speedwell are particularly aggressive in summer. These weeds can overtake weak lawns quickly.

Summer Lawn Weed Control Tips

  • Avoid mowing 3 days before and after application of weed control for best results
  • You can manually pull out weeds in your lawn. Make sure to pull out all the roots as some weeds can regrow from broken roots.
  • NOTE: Do not apply weed control to your lawn if temperatures are above 25°C as this can cause scorching of the grass.

Summer Lawn Care FAQS

Yes, lawn care in the summer is very important to keeping your lawn looking its best for all those BBQ’s and garden parties. Lawn fertilisation, weed control and regular mowing are just some of the essential maintenance jobs for your lawn to ensure it is looking lush and green all summer long!

At TopGrass we recommend watering your lawn at least every two-three days in dry periods. This should be done with a sprinkler attachment to your hose so as to get an even coverage of your lawn.

We recommend watering the lawn during either the early morning or late evening so as not to be during the hotter periods of the day and risk scorching your grass.

For the best results, you should mow your lawn at least once a week during the summer in order to promote healthy growth. We recommend never mowing over a third of the grass plant in one go. You should not mow your lawn at a height of below one inch, as this could scalp the lawn and damage it in the process.
